Tenenbaum, Jay M., and Jeff Shrager. "Artificial Intelligence Can Help Find a Cure for Cancer." Cancer. Ed. Jacqueline Langwith. Detroit: Greenhaven Press, 2012. At Issue. This Article claims that Artificial Intelligence has positive implications in the field of medicine. Although it says that AI won't actually find a "cure" to cancer, seeing as cancer is not just one single disease, but it will help make breakthroughs in individual cases. With the rapid growth of knowledge in the area of biology and cancer, AI could be the next step into helping physicians get a better foothold in cancer research.
This source would have been a helpful source if it explained a little more about the implications of AI. I found that it was lacking a certain amount of detail pertaining what AI is doing for cancer research now and what it could be doing later on in the future as AI develops further.
Ah, AI. Fun stuff. I think it'd be interesting to look into the ethical implications of this. Whether or not they're going to replace humans in the workforce seems like the most reasonable. Are people still afraid of a mastermind robot AI taking over the world?
ReplyDeleteI've actually looked into this stuff before, I'm surprised this article hasn't mentioned anything more specific about what these machines are doing. Of course, from my perspective the research behind all of this is more interesting than the ethical implications for the same reasons people buy huge gas guzzling trucks. I'm actually wondering if you could factor in the Turing test somehow. That's some cool stuff.
Jay Tenenbaum is a world-renowned internet commerce pioneer. He also founded CommerceNet. Which accelerated the business use of the internet. His knowledge of how to use new technology such as the internet for other things like commerce gives him credibility for talking about how AI could be used in many helpful purposes.
